Overuse of detergent is very common and can wreak havoc on washing machines. How much detergent should you be using? What kind of detergent is best? All these questions and more answered by Robert and Casey during their interview with Everything Lubbock!
With today's efficiency standards, most modern washing machines meet the guidelines to be labeled as energy-efficient high-efficiency (HE) machines. Before HE washers, standard units used nearly 40 gallons of water per load. An HE machine can get your clothes clean with less than half as much, averaging only 11-14 gallons per load!
THE most common problem we see with HE washers is overuse and/or improper use of detergent. It is imperative that you are using an HE detergent in these machines. HE laundry products are formulated for use in high-efficiency and low-water washing machines, and labeled with an "HE" symbol on the packaging. HE detergents are specially designed to suspend soil in a small amount of water so that it is not redeposited onto clean clothes. Non-HE detergents produce high volumes of suds, which require a much larger amount of water to wash away.
In addition to using the right kind of detergent, it is important to use the right amount. HE appliance manufacturers recommend using only 1 tablespoon of HE detergent for a regular sized load, and not to exceed 2 tablespoons for a large load. This is much less than most laundry detergent caps suggest. Overuse will also contribute to over-sudsing.
Excess suds can wreak havoc on HE washing machines. Over suds from improper detergent usage can cause the washer to leak, damage electronic and mechanical components, and void both manufacturer's and home warranty claims. HE washers are unable to adequately remove high volumes of suds, leaving behind soap scum that leads to smelly, unsanitary mold and mildew buildup.
We always recommend reading the use and care manual for your washing machine and all new appliances. It is essential to use the correct amount and type of laundry detergent to ensure optimal cleaning performance and machine longevity. Check out our interview about detergent usage with KLBK!
